Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence -based, collaborative, person centered, communication technique for enhancing a persons’ reason to make healthy behavioral changes. As such, it has been found to be an effective clinical communication tool for patient and practitioner when the patient is in the acute/chronic and rehabilitate stage of care with an emphasis on care plan adherence, self-efficacy, confidence, and readiness.
In addition, MI is shown to be an effective tool when addressing the patient’s unhealthy health behavior choices such as tobacco use, weight status challenges, sedentary behavior, which can result in lifestyle related disorders.
Finally, MI serves as the foundation to the wellness consultation which can guide the patient toward self-empowerment, improved health, and well-being.
