In this presentation, we seek to describe the importance of biomedical informatics as applied to the chiropractic profession, namely through the use of the electronic health record EHR. We introduce the field of biomedical informatics, and subfields of clinical informatics and public health informatics, as they relate to the chiropractic profession. We discuss the types of data collected in the EHR, uses of these data in informatics applications, and the current state of the chiropractic profession with respect to EHR data. We identify the use and significance of informatics and EHR data as a vehicle for improving the chiropractic profession in three fields academic training, clinical practice, and research through health information exchange, data-driven quality improvement, and increased opportunity for interfacing and integration with other healthcare professionals.
