By: Institute for Continuing Education

Course Description

Course Description:

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, typically caused by viral infections, toxins, or autoimmune conditions. There are five main types of viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, and E), each with different modes of transmission, symptoms, and severity. Hepatitis can range from mild illness lasting a few weeks to a chronic, life-threatening condition that can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Symptoms often include fatigue, jaundice, nausea, and abdominal pain. Treatment varies based on the type, with options like antiviral medications and vaccines available for certain types. Prevention includes vaccination, good hygiene, and safe practices like avoiding contaminated food or blood exposure.

Upon completion of this class, the participant will be able to:

  • List the types of hepatitis. Students will be able to identify and differentiate between the various types of hepatitis (A, B, C, D, and E) and their modes of transmission.
  • Recognize symptoms and diagnosis.Students will be able to describe the common symptoms of hepatitis and the methods used for diagnosis, including lab tests and imaging.
  • Explore risk factors and prevention. Students will be able to explain the risk factors associated with hepatitis infections and outline preventive measures, such as vaccination and hygiene practices.
  • Describe the treatment and management. Students will learn about the different treatment options available for hepatitis, including antiviral medications, lifestyle changes, and liver transplantation for severe cases.
  • Discuss the global impact of hepatitis. Students will be able to analyze the global prevalence of hepatitis, the challenges in disease control, and the efforts made by health organizations to reduce its spread.
