In America, 1 in 12 babies are born low birthweight, 1 in 6 babies are never breastfed, and 1 in 4 children are overweight or obese by their 5th birthday. Approximately 15% of US children in the ages 3-17 years are affected by neurodevelopmental disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, intellectual disability, autism, and other developmental delays. The prevalence of childhood asthma in the US is 8%, with the highest rates in African American boys. What are mediators of influence to promote plasticity and resilience within the first 1000 days and beyond? How can we foster innate and adaptive immunity during gestational development?
