2 CEUs for NJ Chiropractors and NJ Chiropractic Assistants.*

NJ Chiropractors are required to complete a minimum of 2 credits of ethics or recordkeeping and documentation each biennial license renewal period. NJ Massage Therapists are required to complete at least 2 credits of ethics every biennial license renewal period. This course meets these requirements.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
Understand basic concepts of healthcare professional ethics
Recognize an ethical situation and/or professional misconduct
Evaluate real-life examples of ethical situations and apply principles of ethical decision-making to those situations
Consider effects of unethical behavior on patient or practitioner
Understand when and how to report unethical behavior and to whom
Understand basic healthcare laws and regulations today
Comprehend the legal and ethical benefits of good recordkeeping

Outline:
Discuss Current Healthcare Laws and Regulations
Review Healthcare Ethics Standards (typical of professional codes of conduct), such as::
Need to comply with laws and regulations, patient confidentiality, medical necessity, respecting the rights of patient, nondiscriminatory behavior, reporting of incidents of misconduct, disclosure of interest in recommended products/services.
Identify an Ethical Issue and its Scope (General RIPS Concepts)
Information-gathering, relevance and interpretation
Determining stakeholders and possible consequences
Consideration of laws, duties, obligations, professional guidelines
Right vs. Wrong Tests (legal, feels wrong, front page, mom)
What to Do about It
Rules, Ends, Patient Care
Who to Tell
Discuss Real-life Ethical Situations in Healthcare
