Concussions/TBI in Personal Injury
By: American Academy of Motor Vehicle Injuries (AAMVI)

Course Description

  • Mechanism of injury and how the direction of impact affects the risk of injury to specific structures
  • Rotational motion and how it adds to the risk of injury, especially with concussion/TBI
  • Cranial Nerve Exam: There is a reason you were taught this in school, and it was not just to create multiple choice questions for the finals. Why “Cranial Nerves II – XII grossly intact” is a gross exaggeration that can damage a case
  • Concussion/TBI: It is not possible to introduce enough force to damage structures in the cervical spine without bouncing the brain inside the cranium. If you have diagnosed a cervical injury and have not diagnosed a concussion you have not done an exam
  • Impairment Ratings: How the AMA Guides allow for rating each injury with a number the insurance company understands
  • New CDC criteria to diagnose TBIs: This just came out on December 7, 2023. If you work with personal injury cases or athletes, you need this.
