Course Description

Program Title: Prague School to Athletic Development Part A: Functional Assessment and Core Training Program hours: 1:00PM - 5:00PM Sept. 9/16, 9:00AM - 5:00PM Sept. 10-11/16 Program Date: Sept. 9-11/16 Program instructor: Dr. Craig Liebenson CE total: 17 hours Program Description: This series translates Dr. Liebenson's knowledge of the School's philosophies and his notable clinical experience into a comprehensive knowledge- and skill-based seminar for health care practitioners and fitness professionals. The PS2AD series will challenge the following paradigms: 1 symptom-based to a focus on the source of pain in the kinetic chain; 2 passive to active rehabilitation i.e., self-care oriented; 3 clinician-centered to patient/athlete- centered; 4 output-based to outcome-based; 5 hardware i.e., structural to software i.e., functional. Program Goals / Objectives: i.e. at the end of this program, the registrant will be able to… Expand knowledge of rehabilitation and performance concepts, such as: 1 difference between functional and structural pathology of the motor system; 2 tri-planar sagittal, frontal and transverse dysfunction; 3 regional interdependence in the kinetic chain; 4 clinical significance of fundamental human factors e.g., upright posture, single-leg stance, respiration; and 5 developmental kinesiology Guide the application of this knowledge, thereby enhancing skill and technique in various assessment and treatment methods, such as: 1 performing a functional screen; 2 performing an assessment-training-reassessment process; 3 determining when to progress and regress treatment; 4 determining functional goals and the appropriate starting point of care; and 5 identifying where to mobilize versus stabilize Program Topics: ASSESSMENT: functional pathology of the motor system; intorduction to the functional screen; the Clinical Audit Process: finding the "functional training range"; the Magnificent 7: functional screen of mobility, posture, balance, squat, lunge, respiration; "grand rounds" clinical problem-solving the Magnificent 7 CORE: Clinical Audut Process cont'd: assess-correct-reassess process to determine how/when to progress/regress a "track" or choose a tangential "track"; the role of the diaphragm, pelvic floor and stabilization system in cylinder function; basics of core stability from biomechanical and neurodevelopmental perspectives; Vleeming's straight leg raise, McGill's Big 3, wall bug, plank saws, plank roll, stir the pot, anti-flexion and anti-rotation MOBILIZATIONS AND SPINE-SPARING / HIP-HINGING: external versus internal cues in facilitating skill acquisition; fear-avoidance beliefs, threat and "guarded" movements; from fetal to upright posture -- the Verticalization Process: The T4"Dead Zone"; mobility versus stability: the hip/spine connection; hip/T-spine/anterior chest wall mobilizations; hip hinge adn spine-sparing strategies; squats
