Course Description This 1-hour course will develop the students’ knowledge of 1st Ray Function and it functional foundation with pathological pronation explanation, reviewing Functional Hallux Limitus and understanding step powers. The correlation of 1st Ray Function and muscular inhibition to musculoskeletal low back pain will be reviewed with the appropriate orthotic treatment and application to combat low back pain. Course Objectives By the end of the course, participants will be able to: • Understand whether pronation is really an etiology or instead one of several manifestations of stress to the musculoskeletal system related to a different origin • Understand how steps are powered and how this sets the stage for a repetitive process of postural stress • Understand how Functional hallux limitus is a primary sagittal plane obstacle • Understand how pathologic pronation as a lift, not heel contact phenomena • Understand how sagittal plane restriction relates to a chronic reduction in hip extension • Understand how non-specific lumbar stress occurs and how it relates to a failure of efficient swing phase initiation • Understand the simplicity of the treatment process by allowing the 1st ray to plantarflex at the appropriate time in the gait cycle
