Course Description

PROGRAM DATE: Nov. 15-18/18 TITLE OF PROGRAM: 2nd Annual McGill Method Conference TIMES: 9:00am–5:00pm PST, each day INSTRUCTORS: Dr. Stuart McGill, Dr. Edward Cambridge, Mr. Joel Proskewitz TOTAL CE HOURS: 28.0 Hours PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: To assist health care and fitness professionals in meeting eligibility requirements for the McGill Method Certification, Dr. Stuart McGill and faculty will be running all three of his McGill Method seminars in succession. Dr. McGill is University Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo in spine biomechanics and author of over 300 scientific publications and 3 textbooks. His 30+ years of research on lumbar spine function and injury mechanisms, patient assessment, corrective exercise prescription and performance training have made Dr. McGill a world-renowned expert, sought after by medical management groups, governments, corporations, legal firms and international elite sports teams and athletes. This is the only opportunity to attend all three seminars at the conference. Nov. 15-16/18 – McGill Method Level 1 – Foundation: For the pain-free back Dr. Stu McGill's two-day seminar, Foundation: For the pain-free back, updates delegates on the most recent developments in clinical biomechanics of the lumbar spine, provides guidance in the application of this foundation to rehabilitation centers and training facilities, enhances skill and technique in client assessment and corrective/therapeutic and performance-enhancing exercise prescription, and empowers delegates with the knowledge to reduce the risk of injury, optimize health outcomes and enhance performance of their patients and clients. Nov. 17/18 – McGill Method Level 2 – Assessment: Converging on a precise diagnosis In this one-day seminar, Assessment: Converging on a precise diagnosis, Dr. Stu McGill and faculty demonstrate and teach pain provocation through mechanical and neurological approaches to reveal the cause of pain. The algorithm is based on branching logic. Delegates will hone their manual and clinical reasoning skills by work-shopping both on and off the exam table. This forms the foundation for teaching the patient what to avoid, followed by progressions of corrective exercise. The second stage begins when pain is controlled, and the objectives shift to enhancing function and performance. This process will be taught through patient/athlete case studies. Nov. 18/18 – McGill Method Level 3 – High Performance Training: Progressing backs from pain to performance In this one-day seminar, High Performance Training: Progressing backs from pain to performance, Dr. Stu McGill and faculty introduce and discuss mechanisms and training techniques used with world-class athletes. The development of movement / motor patterns, endurance, speed and power, within the principles that minimize back injury, or exacerbation of existing injury, are work-shopped. Program design is influenced by quantifying the athletic demands and current capabilities of the individual. PROGRAM GOALS / OBJECTIVES: Nov. 15-16/18 – McGill Method Level 1 – Foundation: For the pain-free back • Update delegates on the most recent developments in clinical biomechanics of the lumbar spine -- how it works and becomes injured. This is to support an evidence-informed approach to clinical decision-making. • Provide guidance in the application of this foundation of knowledge to the clinic, workplace, rehabilitation centre and training facility. This is to reduce the risk of injury, optimize health outcomes and enhance performance. • Enhance skill and technique in client assessment and corrective/therapeutic and performance-enhancing exercise prescription. • Empower attendees the knowledge to reduce the risk of injury, optimize health outcomes and enhance performance of their patients and clients. Nov. 17/18 – McGill Method Level 2 – Assessment: Converging on a precise diagnosis • Update delegates on the most recent developments in assessment of low back disorders, including the most challenging cases. • Create linkages from assessment findings to corrective and therapeutic exercises and drills. • Provide practice and technique development with workshops throughout each day. Nov. 18/18 – McGill Method Level 3 – High Performance Training: Progressing backs from pain to performance • Update delegates on recent developments in enhancing performance of formerly pained and injured backs. • Give practice and technique development with workshops throughout the day.
