Advanced practice in chiropractic medicine stands as a progressive and evolving concept and credential within many health science professions.  Advanced practice in health care is of interest in response to continued technological advances, increase complexity of health care, structural changes in health care delivery, and changing health care needs (Schober and Affara, 2006). These demands include the chiropractic medicine profession as a major health care discipline. Advanced practice chiropractic medicine has been prone to professional and political debate. However, to focus the intention of advance practice chiropractic medicine, a definition of its capacity and function within the profession and inter-disciplinary is required. This presentation will review the literature for the conceptualization and nature of advanced practice, acknowledge challenges for its development, and suggest its purpose-driven function in order to come to a recommended definition within chiropractic medicine.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Describe the conceptualization, nature, and purpose of advanced practice as a general function in the health science and health care professions.
    2. Construct the function of advanced practice chiropractic in his or her clinical, educational, or research setting or specialty.
